what students see

Built in Kiambu, Kenya. For everywhere.

Your class talks to peers abroad. You read every word.

A Class YAP is a closed space for one class for one school year. Your students hold real conversations with young people in other countries, inside their own age group. $79, one payment, up to 35 students.

YAP is being built and is not open yet, so a Class YAP cannot be bought today. Reserving costs nothing and charges nothing.

Two hand-cut paper land shapes far apart, each with a paper speech bubble, joined by a dashed yellow line.

A student in your class and a student 8,000 km away, on a topic they both chose, in words you can read afterwards.

the purchase criterion

Safety is in the shape of the product, not in a policy page.

You are the person who will be asked why this tool was allowed in the school. So each of these is a mechanism you can check, not a promise we make.

Sealed age groups

13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 22. A student is only ever matched inside their own age group. There is no path an adult could take to a child on YAP, because the pools never touch.

No photo, no video, no voice, no upload

YAP is text and a drawn avatar. There is no upload of any kind, so no picture of your student exists here to be screenshotted, traded or used against them.

Guard reads every message first

Guard is the moderator that reads each message before it is delivered. Contact fishing, sexual content, threats and slurs stop before the other person sees them.

You can read all of it

Every message your students send and receive in the class space and in a group is readable by you, searchable, in full. Students are told this on the first screen.

Nobody enters by knowing a secret

Entry is membership, never a password. You add students to a roster, then lock it. Codes are single-use, expiring and revocable by you at any time.

One payment, no renewal trap

$79 once, up to 35 students, valid for one school year. There is no subscription, no per-seat charge, and nothing is ever sold to a student.

included, not extra

Groups of 4 to 8 for a project.

Inside your Class YAP you can make a group for one piece of work. You name it and write the pinned brief, which is the first message in it. Half the group can be your students and half a partner class in another country.

  • One age group per group, always. A university group is 18 to 22.
  • Guard reads every message in a group, exactly as everywhere else.
  • No files, no photos, no documents and no voice notes. The work is the conversation.
  • Both teachers read the whole group transcript, and students are told so.
  • A partner-class invite code is held only by the other teacher, never by a student.
  • Being in a group together does not open a private channel between two students.

how a student gets in

Membership, never a password.

A code that is passed around a corridor is a password, and a password is how the wrong person gets in. So YAP does not have one, for students or for you.

  1. You enrol the roster

You type your students' first names. That list is the class, and nobody outside it can be in the class space.

  2. Each student gets their own code

One code, one name, single use, and it expires. A code that has been used cannot let a second person in.

  3. You lock the roster

One tap after the lesson. From then on no code works at all, and you can revoke any code before that.

  4. A partner class is joined teacher to teacher

The invite code for a shared group goes to the other teacher, never to a student.

What you are choosing between.

  • Free class pen-pal programmes

They give you a project and a mailing list. Conversation happens when you set it, and stops when the unit ends.

  • Discord servers

No age groups at all. Your student is one of 4,000 people, and you cannot read what is said to them.

  • Random-chat sites

Adults and children in the same pool, video by default, and moderation after the harm rather than before delivery.

A Class YAP costs $79 because it is a product with a cost per message, not a grant-funded programme. That is also why it is not going to be withdrawn when the grant ends.

Put your class first in the queue.

Class YAP goes on sale when YAP opens. Reserving tells us which country and age group to open first, and it puts your class in front of the queue.

We write to you once, on the day it can be bought. If you need a data processing agreement or an invoice first, say so in the box and it will be ready.

Questions before then go to schools@, and a person answers within a day.

Nothing is charged today and there is no account to make. Your address is used to tell you when Class YAP opens, and for nothing else.

The questions a head of department asks.

Who exactly can talk to my students?

Young people in the same sealed age group as them, on YAP. Nobody older, and nobody outside your class in your class space.

Can I read a private conversation?

You read every message in the class space and in every group. A student's own conversations on the free YAP are theirs, and they are told which is which.

What happens at the end of the school year?

The Class YAP ends and the transcripts stay readable to you for 90 days. Your students keep their own accounts on the free YAP.

Do students need an email address?

No. A student on your roster joins with their code and a nickname, and no email is asked for.

What does YAP do with student data?

A first name, a birth date, an age group and messages. No photo of a student exists anywhere on YAP. Deleting an account removes the nickname, the messages and everything they wrote about themselves, within 24 hours.

What if something goes wrong in a conversation?

Guard stops sexual content, contact fishing, threats and slurs before delivery. A report from a student is read the same day, and reporting blocks that person permanently.
